In honour of the Australian experience of war, and to commemorate the service and sacrifice of men and women across all conflicts, we present a collection of challenge coins and tokens - designed exclusively for the Memorial Shop.Ā
This challenge coin depicts the iconic duo - Simpson and his donkey. Private Simpson and his pack of donkeys rescued wounded soldiers from the Gallipoli Peninsula during the First World War. Their story - one of courage and compassion - is legend.Ā
The coin's obverse is embossed with a stylised design of Simpson and his donkey carrying a wounded soldier, encircled by the words "Pte John Simpson Kirkpatrick" along with his date of birth and death. The reverse features a silhouette of the Australian War Memorial's commemorative area.
